Update From Dr. Maresh to Parents

April 19, 2016

Dear Creekland Middle School Parents/Guardians:
I am writing to update you on an issue I shared with you last week regarding a social media posting that directed a threat toward our school. The good news is that we have worked with law enforcement and they have been able to track down the origin of this post. The unfortunate news is that it was posted by one of our students. We have addressed this incident with that student and the student's family. This student will face appropriate discipline consequences from the school and also may face criminal charges as the police conclude their investigation.
I would ask that you use this as a teachable moment with your children, talking to them about the importance of their social media posts and the very serious trouble it can lead to if they are not careful and responsible. As always, I appreciate the support you have provided our school as we have dealt with this matter. This type of situation can be very disruptive to a school community and your response has allowed our students and teachers to keep their focus on teaching and learning.

Letter From Dr. Maresh to Parents

April 14, 2016
Dear Creekland Middle School Parents/Guardians:

I am writing to share with you that we are aware of a social media posting that directed a threat toward our school on April 20. I felt it was important for you to know that while we do not have any evidence to substantiate this threat, we are taking it seriously. We have alerted police and our school resource officers are working with other law enforcement agencies to identify the source of this post. In addition, we will have a very visible police presence on campus that day.

Unfortunately, these types of threats can be very disruptive to a school community. By the very nature of social media and how quickly things like this spread, it is likely that you or your child may have seen this posting or may encounter it. If you or your student has any information about where this Instagram posting originated, I encourage you to report that information immediately either to the police or to our school. In addition, I ask that we do not spread unsubstantiated rumors, because doing so gives these kinds of threats more power.

Providing our students and staff with a safe school community is a priority. I know this is a priority we all share. Our focus will continue to be on teaching and learning and we will continue with all school activities as normal next week. As always, I thank you for your continued support of our school and students!

Thank you Gwinnett County for supporting your schools. On Nov. 3, Gwinnett voters went to the polls and the 2015 E-SPLOST renewal passed with approximately 75% of those who voted saying "Yes" to the measure.
